There are hundreds of reasons to love Milwaukee, and the word is starting to get out. Travel site Lonely Planet recently made a short list of the most unexpectedly exciting places to see in the United States, and Milwaukee made the top ten.

For non-locals, Milwaukee’s obsession with beer, cheese and brats is entirely unique and fantastic. As Lonley Planet contributor Karla Zimmerman writes,  in reference to the famous sixth-inning sausage race, “Where else in the world can one travel to see life-size sausages?

As all Milwaukeean’s know, beer has always been a big part of Wisconsin culture. Whether that means stealing sips of foam as a child or ordering a couple beers at lunch on a Wednesday, it’s safe to say that Wisconsin has a pretty high tolerance.

In fact, Milwaukee has the highest bar-per-capita rates in the United States. We’re ranked #2 out of all fifty states (New Orleans is#1).

To accompany great beer, one must have great food, and there’s no shortage in Milwaukee. Besides the usual suspects, beer-boiled bratwursts and deep-friend cheese curds, Milwaukee is home to a host of restaurants that would excite any foodie.

The city has a surprising array of ethnic dining options, from Ethiopian lunch specials to late-night Ramen. And whether you’re looking for a high-end, farm-to-table dining experience or a down and dirty local Friday night fish fry, Milwaukee’s got you covered.

Aside from the food, Milwaukee boasts a considerably impressive collection of museums and entertainment venues. This is especially notable in the summertime months, when dozens of outdoor festivals pop up. Like Summerfest and the Wisconsin State Fai, to name a few.

For year-round entertainment the Milwaukee Art Museum is perhaps most nationally known for housing a collection from Georgia O’Keeffe as well as an original Monet.
